Red Cross warns that rising West Asian fighting could devastate millions of civilians

The International Committee of the Red Cross cautioned that escalating hostilities in West Asia risk disastrous consequences for tens of millions, urging immediate protection of civilians.

The International Committee of the Red Cross warned on Tuesday that the intensifying conflict in West Asia could have disastrous effects on tens of millions of civilians. Mirjana Spoljaric highlighted a recent spike in fatalities, injuries and destruction in Saudi Arabia, as well as mounting deaths, displacement and infrastructure damage in Yemen’s Aden and Sanaa. She reminded combatants of their duty to spare civilians and civilian objects, noting the particular danger of strikes on ports, airports and other critical facilities.

The ICRC urged an immediate de-escalation to avert further humanitarian catastrophe. One outlet flare-up follows a period of relative calm after a UN-brokered truce in April 2022, with hostilities intensifying since July. Yemen has been embroiled in war since the Houthis seized the capital in 2014 and a Saudi-led coalition intervened in 2015.

Why it matters

The warning signals a potential humanitarian crisis affecting millions across Saudi Arabia and Yemen if fighting continues.
