Red-green parties push for moratorium on teen deportations and policy overhaul

Swedish left-wing parties met with migration spokespeople and a youth network to discuss halting deportations of young adults, including those over 21.

Migration policy officials from the red-green bloc gathered with the Network for Youth Threatened by Teen Deportations to address the growing concern over expulsions of young adults. The parties concluded that the government's existing “ventil” does not adequately protect those aged 21 and older, urging a temporary moratorium on teen deportations. Vänsterpartiet, Centerpartiet and Miljöpartiet all advocated reinstating the “particularly compassionate circumstances” provision that was abolished in 2023, which would allow affected youths to reapply for residence permits.

While the Social Democrats have not publicly endorsed the specific proposal, they expressed willingness to discuss and compromise. Social Democrat migration spokesperson Ida Karkiainen highlighted the need to examine how long-term residence, language skills, education and conduct could influence permit decisions. The meeting underscored a broader call for a new government to resolve the issue.

Why it matters

The debate could reshape Sweden's approach to young migrants and influence future residency legislation.
