Red Sox lose Roman Anthony to wrist injury during wild-card series

Roman Anthony suffered additional wrist damage in Game 1 of the wild-card series, forcing the Red Sox to remove him from the roster.

In a 9-0 loss to the Yankees in Game 1 of the wild-card series, the Red Sox also lost Roman Anthony for the remainder of the matchup after he aggravated a wrist injury. Anthony, who had only two plate appearances, suffered further muscle damage in his right wrist, according to manager Chad Tracy. The team sent him back to Boston for additional imaging, which confirmed the new injury and triggered a roster move with MLB approval.

The Red Sox submitted paperwork to replace Anthony, while former Yankee Jahmai Jones filled the DH slot against left-hander Max Fried. Tracy emphasized that the team has dealt with similar setbacks all season and will continue without Anthony.

Why it matters

The injury removes a key young player from the Red Sox's postseason roster, affecting their chances in the series.
