Red Sox poised to activate Adley Rutschman ahead of Tuesday showdown
Boston plans to bring Adley Rutschman off the injured list before Tuesday’s game after a successful workout in Toronto.
Before the Red Sox begin their road series against the Toronto Blue Jays, Adley Rutschman took part in a batting-practice drill at the Rogers Centre and handled a bullpen session for pitcher Patrick Sandoval. Interim manager Chad Tracy indicated that, provided the workout reveals no issues, the team will activate Rutschman for Tuesday night’s game. The 28-year-old has been sidelined since July 18 because of left-wrist inflammation and finished a short rehabilitation assignment with Triple-A Worcester, where he logged a game as catcher and another as designated hitter.
Boston surrendered catcher Carlos Narváez and several prospects to acquire Rutschman and Jake Rogers from the Baltimore Orioles, making his health a critical factor in the club’s postseason push. If cleared, Rutschman could catch Sandoval, with whom he already worked during his Worcester rehab, offering immediate familiarity for the new battery. The activation will also force the Red Sox to decide which of their three catchers—Rutschman, Rogers or Connor Wong—remains on the active roster.
Why it matters
Rutschman's return could boost Boston's lineup and pitching coordination as they chase a playoff spot.
