Reddit citations in ChatGPT plunge, prompting marketers to rethink AI strategies

Data shows ChatGPT’s references to Reddit dropped sharply in mid-August, though the model still accesses Reddit content behind the scenes.

Recent measurements from Promptwatch indicate that ChatGPT’s share of Reddit citations dropped by 86% in mid-August, a pattern. Despite the visible decline, AI SEO specialist Suganthan Mohanadasan discovered that the model still queries Reddit during answer generation, opting to credit brand websites more frequently in the output. Tim de Rosen, CEO of AIVO, cautioned marketers that building strategies around any one source can lead to sudden visibility losses.

Duolingo’s chief marketing officer Manu Orssaud explained that their Reddit efforts concentrate on user needs and brand perception, not on tracking AI citation rates. Industry voices such as Glen Allsopp of Ahrefs noted that attempts to game Reddit have long been frowned upon, and Kyle Lock of Butterball emphasized the need for agility as AI models evolve. OpenAI and Reddit both reiterated that citation levels are not fixed and that Reddit remains a valuable data source for conversational AI.

Why it matters
