Reddit menopause chats reveal emotional and cognitive symptoms doctors often miss
A JAMA Network Open study matched Reddit menopause discussions with UCSF health records, showing that mood and brain-fog issues are far under-documented in clinical notes.
An analysis published in JAMA Network Open examined conversations from one of the world’s biggest Reddit menopause forums and compared them with more than two million electronic health record notes from the University of California, San Francisco. Clinical documentation focused on physical manifestations, while Reddit participants mentioned emotional upheaval three times as often and cognitive complaints like brain fog nearly four times as often.
Women described doctors labeling these issues as psychiatric or neurological conditions, resulting in needless testing and medication. The author, an epidemiology professor at the University of Maryland, links the discrepancy to a long-standing tendency to downplay women’s symptoms, producing an incomplete medical record that shapes future research and guidelines. She proposes that online patient discussions should inform new research questions and prompt clinicians to ask broader questions. The piece also notes heightened public focus on menopause, including a $215 million allocation from Melinda French Gates, but warns that without richer data the attention may become commercial rather than therapeutic.
Why it matters
Understanding missed menopause symptoms can improve diagnosis, reduce unnecessary tests, and guide better treatment for millions of women.
