Reds ace Hunter Greene faces second Tommy John surgery, sidelined for up to 18 months

During a bullpen session in early August, Reds pitcher Hunter Greene experienced elbow discomfort that led to an MRI. The imaging diagnosed a torn ulnar collateral ligament, the same injury that forced him to undergo Tommy John surgery in 2019 while still in the minors. The 27-year-old right-hander had his second such surgery on a Wednesday and was subsequently moved to the 60-day injured list.

Team officials estimate his rehabilitation could take anywhere from twelve to eighteen months, effectively ending his participation in the current season and likely most of the next. Greene is contractually tied to Cincinnati through the 2028 season and holds a club option for 2029, though his future will depend on his recovery and performance after returning. The Reds will need to adjust their rotation in his absence.
