Regional council approves state takeover and expansion plans for Karlovy Vary Airport

The Karlovy Vary region voted to transfer ownership of its airport to the state and approved a runway extension of 360 metres.

Officials in the Karlovarský kraj have decided that the airport will become state-owned. The council also endorsed a plan to lengthen the runway by 360 metres and broaden the airfield, allowing larger aircraft and longer routes. The upgrades aim to turn the facility into a hub for the regional air-rescue service, which is currently provided by the army from Plzeň. Current flight times to nearby ski resorts do not meet required standards.

Why it matters

State control and runway expansion could boost regional transport, tourism and emergency services in the Karlovy Vary area.
