Regional NSW towns see house prices rise despite broader market slowdown
Most regional areas of New South Wales posted higher median house prices than a year ago, even as the overall market slipped modestly.
According to the latest Domain House Price data, regional New South Wales saw a slight 1.2% dip in median house values to $820,000 for the September quarter, but the figure is still 2.6% higher than a year ago. Some towns posted double-digit jumps: Dungog's median rose to $907,500 after a 26.9% annual increase, Inverell reached $475,000 with a 23.4% rise, and Broken Hill climbed 22.7% to $270,000. Experts attribute the resilience to limited housing stock, strong local job markets and continued investor interest, although recent tax changes and high borrowing costs have begun to curb that demand.
Regional sentiment remains steadier than in Sydney, where prices fell 4.7% in the same period. Analysts warn that smaller markets can be volatile, but overall fundamentals are keeping regional prices buoyant.
