Regular exercise may boost the brain's waste-clearance system in older adults
New research from Victoria University suggests that physical activity supports the brain's glymphatic cleanup, potentially slowing age-related cognitive decline.
A team of researchers at Victoria University examined how physical activity influences the brain's glymphatic clearance pathway, which is most active during sleep and becomes increasingly vital with age. Their review, appearing in Trends in Neurosciences, identified that exercise can lower blood pressure, reduce vascular stiffness, diminish brain inflammation, decrease resting norepinephrine, and enhance deep-sleep slow-wave activity—all processes linked to more effective waste removal.
Lead author James Broatch noted that better sleep and healthier blood vessels may be key mechanisms by which exercise protects against dementia and Alzheimer's disease. The study calls for further work to pinpoint optimal exercise intensity, modality, and applicability for individuals already experiencing cognitive impairment. Nonetheless, the authors stress that incorporating regular, heart-rate-raising movement early in life is advisable for long-term brain health.
