Regulator OKs £3.4bn Extra Water Company Spending, Raising Household Bills
Ofwat has permitted water firms to spend an additional £3.4 billion, a move that will lift water charges for millions in England and Wales.
The water regulator Ofwat announced that it will allow water companies to draw an extra £3.4 billion beyond the £104 billion investment plan approved in late 2024. The additional funds cover £1.2 billion for safeguarding infrastructure and £477 million to support housing construction and AI-related datacentre projects. Five firms - Southern Water, Thames Water, Severn Trent, Wessex Water and South East Water - will be permitted to raise customer bills sooner, with the remaining companies deferring cost recovery to the 2030s. The move follows a government push for 1.5 million new homes and AI growth zones, raising concerns about water and energy capacity.
An extra £34 million is earmarked to cut toxic chemicals in the water supply after data showed every English water body is contaminated. Ofwat executive director Helen Campbell said the funding will unlock housing and business growth while improving water quality, and warned that any under-performance could see spending reclaimed.
