Reliance's JioHotstar replaces Hotstar abroad, launches without live sports
Reliance's streaming service JioHotstar is taking over Hotstar in the UK, Canada and Singapore, debuting with a large library of entertainment content but no live sports.
Reliance Industries' streaming platform JioHotstar is set to supplant Hotstar in the United Kingdom, Canada and Singapore, with the transition beginning on September 2. Users in those regions will retain their login credentials, but the new app will deliver more than 160,000 hours of Indian films, TV originals, reality shows and Star network channels, while live sports such as the IPL and cricket are excluded at launch because of existing content contracts.
The rollout does not include the United States, though further international expansion is planned. Content will be offered in 12 languages with dubbing and subtitles, and subscription fees are comparable to current Hotstar rates. Amit Malhotra, head of international business for JioStar, said the move targets the South Asian diaspora and a wider global audience seeking diverse stories.
Why it matters
The shift expands Reliance's global streaming footprint, affecting competition and content choices for diaspora viewers.
