Rema 1000 checks its freezers after French cyberattack on smart refrigeration units
After hackers raised temperatures in smart freezers at French supermarkets, Rema 1000 is conducting extra checks on its own refrigeration equipment.
A recent cyberattack on smart refrigeration systems in French supermarkets caused temperatures to rise to 50 °C, resulting in the loss of food valued at millions of euros. The compromised units were produced by Danfoss, which also supplies Rema 1000’s stores. Although Rema 1000 has recently modernised its cooling infrastructure, the retailer is performing an additional audit of its freezers to confirm they do not contain the outdated components targeted in France.
Harald Kalvøy, head of security and preparedness, explained that Rema 1000 is in dialogue with Danfoss and is tightening its cyber-security protocols across the supply chain. He emphasized the chain’s critical role in delivering food across Norway and noted ongoing training for handling such incidents. Danfoss indicated that the French units were older models no longer receiving software or security updates.
Why it matters
The incident shows how cyber threats can jeopardize food safety and supply chains, prompting retailers to reassess equipment security.
