Remains of Hurricane Helene's Last Missing Tennessee Victim Identified After Two Years
Authorities have finally recovered the body of Nancy Tucker, the last missing person from Hurricane Helene in Tennessee, two years after the flood destroyed her home.
The final missing victim of Hurricane Helene in Tennessee, Nancy Tucker, 76, was identified two years after the Sept. 27, 2024 flood that swept away her Washington County home. Her husband, Jimmy Tucker, was recovered shortly after the disaster, but her remains eluded rescuers until a search crew working on Jackson Island in the Cherokee National Forest uncovered them on Saturday. Searchers had logged over 400 miles of terrain since February, but dense debris and restrictions on federal land delayed thorough removal until a summer contract permitted heavy machinery.
Sheriff’s Department spokesperson Susan Saylor said the find fulfilled Sheriff Keith Sexton’s promise to bring every missing person home. Medical examiners confirmed the identification on Monday, bringing closure to the Tucker family after a prolonged effort.
Why it matters
The recovery ends a two-year search, offering closure to a family and highlighting challenges of disaster response on protected lands.
