Remnants of Hurricane Isaias Bring Heavy Rain and Strong Winds to Western Norway
Meteorologists warn that the remains of Hurricane Isaias, combined with a low-pressure system near Greenland, will dump up to 50 mm of rain in 12 hours on Norway’s Vestlandet region, especially Bergen and Stavanger.
Remnants of Hurricane Isaias have joined forces with a low-pressure area near Greenland and are heading straight for Norway’s Vestlandet coast. Forecasts predict a modest shower on Tuesday, delivering roughly 20 mm of rain and wind gusts reaching 23 m/s in the centre of Bergen during the afternoon rush hour. The most intense phase is expected on Thursday, when up to 50 mm of rain could fall within a twelve-hour window, affecting both Bergen and Stavanger.
Despite the severity, the meteorological service has not raised a yellow alert, as the region tolerates higher rainfall totals before triggering warnings, with the cutoff set between 60 and 80 mm. A short respite is anticipated on Wednesday, and the weekend may see drier conditions, according to the institute’s chief meteorologist Johanne Ordahl.
Why it matters
Heavy rain and strong winds could disrupt travel, cause flooding, and affect daily life for residents of western Norway.
