Renfe drops seat reservations and cuts bike and pet fees on select regional lines

Renfe will stop requiring numbered seat reservations on certain Media Distancia and Regional routes from Dec 12 and eliminate extra charges for full-size bicycles and pets up to the specified weights.

Effective Dec 12, Renfe will no longer require passengers on selected Media Distancia and Regional trains to reserve a numbered seat, streamlining the ticket-buying process for frequent travelers. The nine affected route groups cover lines in Galicia (A Coruña-Vigo Guixar, A Coruña-Ferrol), the Valencia-Alicante-Murcia-Cartagena corridor, several Extremadura services, as well as Burgos-Vitoria-Pamplona-Zaragoza, Valencia-Teruel-Zaragoza and Salamanca-Valladolid-Palencia.

In parallel, the railway is removing the supplement for carrying a full-size bicycle and for pets weighing up to 10 kg in carriers or dogs up to 40 kg, though space limits remain. Renfe says the changes respond to passenger demand for more flexibility and are part of a broader modernization strategy for its regional network. The company has not announced any adjustments to fares, train frequency or overall capacity, nor a timetable for a nationwide rollout. Travelers must retain a valid ticket and check the conditions for each specific service.
