Renovation crew uncovers €9 million worth of gold hidden in Belgian cellar

While installing new sewage pipes in a house in east Flanders, a team of builders uncovered a concealed hoard of gold bars and coins worth roughly €9 million. The discovery was made by an 18-year-old summer worker named Kobe, who alerted the site manager Mario and the police. The property belongs to CAW Oost-Vlaanderen, a charity that provides welfare services in Dendermonde, and its director Geert Hillaert expressed hope that the money could eventually support the organization’s work.

Local police have taken the gold to a secure facility and warned the public against trespassing on the active site. Under Belgian law, an owner has five years to claim the treasure; if none appears, the find may be divided between the finder and the property owner, provided no criminal connection is proven.
