Renowned author and former Conservative MP Jeffrey Archer passes away at 86

Jeffrey Archer, the bestselling novelist and former Conservative MP, died peacefully at his home at age 86.

Jeffrey Archer, celebrated for his prolific novels and his stint as a Conservative MP and deputy chairman, died peacefully at his residence while between writing sessions, aged 86. His political journey included a life peerage in 1992 and service in the House of Lords until his retirement in 2024. In 2001, he was sentenced to four years for perjury and perverting the course of justice after an Old Bailey jury found he had lied in a libel suit against The Star newspaper.

He was released early in 2003 and resumed his legislative duties. HarperCollins UK chief executive Kate Elton, who edited Archer’s books, remembered him as a tireless craftsman and a champion of collaborative publishing.
