Georgina Lightning, celebrated for her work as an Indigenous actor and director, died at the age of 63, with her daughter Crystle Lightning confirming the loss in a late-night social-media post. The incident took place at the Enoch Park Race Track during the Enoch Indian Relay World Championship, an event Lightning had mentioned on Facebook the day before. Police arrived after 6:30 p.m. to find a woman dead in the media area, but they have not publicly identified her.
The Enoch Cree Nation expressed mourning for a community member, while the RCMP indicated that Occupational Health and Safety will lead the investigation. Born in Edmonton and a member of the Samson Cree Nation, Lightning was also a vocal supporter of First Nations causes throughout her career.
