Rep. Chip Roy pressures FDA for timely release of mifepristone safety study
Rep. Chip Roy wrote to FDA Acting Commissioner Kyle Diamantas demanding an update on the delayed mifepristone safety study and warning he will seek to block federal funding for the drug’s mail-distribution policy.
Rep. Chip Roy sent a letter to FDA Acting Commissioner Kyle Diamantas requesting a detailed update on the mifepristone safety study that started in September 2025 and was originally slated for completion by the end of 2026. The FDA recently announced the study remains on schedule but will not release its findings until March 2027. Roy contends that the prolonged review undermines congressional efforts to stop federal funding for the January 2023 REMS modification that allowed the abortion pill to be mailed without an in-person visit.
He previously withdrew an amendment that would have barred such funding, based on the expectation that the study would be published that fall. Roy now warns he will re-file the amendment in the upcoming continuing resolution unless the agency reverses the rule or reinstates the in-person requirement, and he seeks a response by Oct. 27.
Why it matters
The dispute could affect whether federal money supports mail-order abortion pills under current FDA rules.
