Rep. Chip Roy urges federal review of Islamic complex near Texas army base

Representative Chip Roy wrote to Attorney General Todd Blanche, Secretary of War Pete Hegseth and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, urging a probe into a proposed Islamic campus near Camp Bullis Military Training Reservation in San Antonio. The 7.25-acre Northside Islamic Center of San Antonio plan features a mosque, residential units, K-12 schools, commercial space and gender-segregated prayer areas governed by Sharia principles.

Roy’s concerns stem from a RAIR Foundation report that alleges the center’s leaders have partnered with groups tied to the Muslim Brotherhood and have solicited donations from unclear overseas sources. Video excerpts of imam AbdulRahman Kattab describing the Oct. 7, 2023 Hamas attacks as a “day of remembrance” and praising the Iran Revolutionary Guard Corps were highlighted as evidence of extremist sympathies. Roy argues that any implementation of Sharia law would undermine the rights of women, children and non-Muslims and should not be allowed on U.S. soil. The Northside Islamic Center and its imam did not provide comment before the story was released.
