Rep. Jason Smith urges tougher action on Canada trade dispute and farmer fuel costs

Jason Smith highlighted the impact of Canada's trade tactics on his Missouri constituency, citing the ban on U.S. wine and liquor that led a local barrel manufacturer to eliminate an entire shift, resulting in job losses. He also claimed Canada is treating U.S. dairy exporters unfairly and urged Washington to apply all available trade tools after the upcoming election. Smith emphasized that affordability, especially fuel costs for tractors and machinery, is the top concern for residents of the 8th Congressional District.

He referenced rising gasoline and diesel prices as a burden on farmers who need relief at the pump. The lawmaker also mentioned a digital-asset tax bill that passed his committee with a 38-5 vote, aiming to provide tax certainty for the crypto industry. Smith expressed hope the measure will advance to the full House and Senate, possibly as part of a larger legislative package.
