Rep. Massie Files Impeachment Articles Targeting Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth

Rep. Thomas Massie has introduced eight impeachment articles against Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, accusing him of war-crimes-related actions in Iran, Venezuela and Yemen.

In a bold legislative move, Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) has filed an eight-article impeachment package against Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, accusing him of overseeing illegal military actions that could constitute war crimes. The charges cover unauthorized operations in Iran, a botched attempt to seize Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, and alleged extrajudicial killings in Yemen. Analysts note that the impeachment could create a dramatic spectacle as senior military leaders are called to testify before Congress about the advice given to both President Donald Trump and Hegseth.

Senator Mark Kelly (D-Ariz.) remarked that six of the eight articles stem from Hegseth following unlawful presidential orders. While Democrats dispute policy details of the Iran war, they appear unified in seeking Hegseth's removal. The effort also raises the question of whether impeachment will replace other partisan strategies, such as the earlier attempt to impeach former Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. If pursued, the case would mark the first time a sitting cabinet member faces impeachment from a member of his own party.

Why it matters

It could trigger a rare impeachment of a cabinet official and heighten partisan conflict over U.S. military actions.
