Rep. Rashida Tlaib urges US to detain Israeli officer linked to child's death in Gaza

Tlaib called on the US to arrest Israeli soldier Sean Glass, accused of commanding the unit that killed five-year-old Hind Rajab in Gaza.

Representative Rashida Tlaib used a Monday social-media post to demand that the United States arrest Israeli soldier Sean Glass, the commander of a unit alleged to have shot five-year-old Hind Rajab in Gaza on January 29, 2024. Tlaib cited the United States’ obligations under the Genocide Convention and the Geneva Conventions to investigate and detain individuals responsible for war crimes. The Hind Rajab Foundation, which monitors alleged Israeli war-crime perpetrators, submitted an emergency request to the US Department of Justice, stating that Glass and his troops were directly near Rajab’s vehicle when it was fired upon.

The child's desperate phone plea and the car’s 335 bullet holes drew global attention, while an independent forensic analysis found no evidence of a firefight, attributing the attack solely to Israeli forces. Israel has opened its own probe, but critics view it as a delay tactic. The United States continues to provide diplomatic, military and economic support to Israel despite mounting accusations of genocide and ongoing ICC investigations of Israeli leaders.

Why it matters

It highlights a push for U.S. accountability for alleged war crimes amid ongoing support for Israel.
