Rep. Ro Khanna's Family Trusts Trade Over $165 Million Amid 2025 Market Surge

Rep. Ro Khanna disclosed that his family trusts executed more than $165 million in stock trades during 2025, a year of strong market gains.

Rep. Ro Khanna submitted a 2025 financial disclosure revealing that trusts owned by his wife and children conducted 5,402 transactions on 244 of the year’s 251 trading days, moving up to $165.4 million in securities. This activity marks a rise from the $137.2 million traded in 2024 and includes more than $70.6 million in sales of stocks, options, ETFs and hedge funds. Khanna, who originally estimated his net worth at no more than $78 million when he took office, now lists a range of $69 million to $167 million, with the bulk of the wealth tied to irrevocable trusts overseen by his father-in-law, Monte Ahuja, and benefiting his wife, Ritu Ahuja Khanna, and their two children.

He maintains he has no direct control or insight into the trusts’ transactions, which are handled by professional managers. Despite the growing personal wealth, Khanna continues to push a statewide initiative to levy a 5 percent wealth tax on California billionaires and has proposed a mechanism allowing cash-poor billionaires to satisfy the tax with pledged shares.

Why it matters

The disclosure highlights potential conflicts between a lawmaker’s personal financial gains and his public push for wealth-tax reforms.
