Report Finds Hundreds of ICE and Border Patrol Agents Charged with Sexual Crimes

A study by the Ohio Immigrant Alliance identified 152 immigration officers and contractors with sexual or violent convictions since 1982, most of whom were charged with sex offenses.

The Ohio Immigrant Alliance examined records of ICE, Customs and Border Protection personnel and related contractors, identifying 152 people with violent or sexual offenses dating back to 1982. Of those, 131 were charged with or convicted of sex crimes, and a large portion involved minors. The investigation found that 45% of the incidents were directly tied to the individuals’ enforcement roles, suggesting the badge was used to facilitate abuse.

The alliance criticizes DHS for both overlooking disqualifying histories during hiring and failing to remove staff after warning signs emerged, noting that background checks do not include family-court records. Notable cases cited include a Border Patrol officer hired after a juvenile assault conviction who later reoffended, a former special agent sentenced to life for assaulting women and intimidation, and an agent who used a youth program to exploit a teenager.

The report urges Congress to halt hiring, re-screen the existing workforce, and establish independent oversight with subpoena power. DHS declined to comment.

Why it matters

It reveals systemic failures in vetting immigration officers, raising concerns about abuse of authority and public safety.
