Report suggests Russian 51st Army commander may have died in Ukrainian strike
Lt. Gen. Sergei Milchakov, commander of Russia’s 51st Combined Arms Army, is reportedly killed in a Ukrainian strike on a command post in occupied Donetsk, though Moscow has not confirmed the loss.
According to multiple Russian outlets, a Ukrainian precision strike on Aug. 26 targeted concealed Russian command posts in occupied Donetsk Oblast, a hit the General Staff confirmed on Aug. 27. The operation is tied to reports that Lt. Gen. Sergei Milchakov, commander of the 51st Combined Arms Army, may have been killed in the attack. Milchakov, who previously led the 1st Donetsk Army Corps and was awarded Hero of Russia in 2024, directed Russian actions in Avdiivka, New York and other locales.
If the reports prove true, he would become the 23rd Russian general killed since the conflict began. Russia has not officially verified his death, and one outlet had not received confirmation from Ukraine’s General Staff at the time of reporting. The strike underscores ongoing efforts by Ukrainian forces to disrupt Russian command structures in a region that remains a central war objective for Moscow.
