Republican gubernatorial hopefuls soften previously firm anti-abortion positions

Republican candidates for governor in Kansas, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin are distancing themselves from earlier calls for stricter abortion bans.

Republican gubernatorial contenders across several states are moderating their stances on abortion. Ty Masterson of Kansas, who previously rallied at anti-abortion protests, now says he would not support a statewide vote to remove constitutional abortion safeguards. In Pennsylvania, Stacy Garrity indicated she would honor the state's current abortion framework, and Wisconsin’s Tom Tiffany labeled the 20-week limit as settled, despite his earlier sponsorship of a six-week ban.

Pollsters suggest the retreat aims to avoid energizing Democratic turnout and to keep the focus on economic concerns that dominate voter priorities. The change underscores the political calculus in tight races where abortion could become a mobilizing issue for opponents. Campaigns for all three candidates did not respond to requests for comment.

Why it matters

The candidates' softened positions could influence voter turnout and shape abortion policy debates in upcoming elections.
