Republican health cuts and immigration policies threaten hospitals and nursing homes

In July 2025 the Republican Congress passed a sweeping health-care bill that schedules $1 trillion in Medicaid cuts for after the 2026 midterms, targeting work requirements and paperwork that could push 10-15 million people off the rolls. The measure also threatens the financial stability of hospitals, many of which depend on Medicaid reimbursements to stay solvent, especially in emergency departments. At the same time, aggressive deportation policies are set to remove large numbers of undocumented laborers from meat-packing plants and Haitian workers from nursing homes and home-health roles.

The loss of these workers, combined with reduced Medicaid funding, may lead to hospital closures, higher costs for paying patients, and staffing shortages in both hospitals and long-term care facilities. Nursing homes, which receive the bulk of their revenue from Medicaid, could see reduced staffing ratios, jeopardizing resident care and increasing the risk of neglect. The combined effect is projected to strain an already fragile health-care system and place additional burdens on vulnerable communities.
