Republican leaders outline narrow path to retain House in upcoming midterms

At the Republicans’ midterm convention in Dallas, House Majority Whip Tom Emmer laid out a strategy that hinges on protecting incumbents and flipping a small number of swing districts, specifically Maine’s 2nd, Washington’s 3rd and Arizona’s 1st. He cited recent court-driven redistricting that gave the party extra opportunities in Alabama, Louisiana, Tennessee and Missouri, while acknowledging possible losses in California and Nevada.

Emmer emphasized the low cost of defending seats already held and the value of battle-tested incumbents. Speaker Mike Johnson added that the GOP enjoys a fundraising lead over Democrats for the first time in a decade and reported strong on-the-ground energy. Despite polling that favors Democrats, Emmer argued the electoral map remains “very close” and manageable for Republicans.
