Republican Mayors in Georgia Back Democratic Senate Candidate Over Trump Endorsement

In a notable break from party lines, three Republican mayors in Georgia—Gail Fry of Toccoa, James Matheson of Valdosta and Julie Smith of Tifton—have endorsed Democratic Senate candidate Jon Ossoff. Fry pointed to an $8.4 million federal grant secured by Ossoff for natural-gas infrastructure as a key factor, noting his direct communication with local officials. Matheson, describing himself as a “hard-core conservative,” emphasized a personal friendship with Ossoff, while Smith praised his responsiveness to South Georgia’s needs.

Their endorsements undermine President Donald Trump’s vigorous backing of Republican nominee Mike Collins, who has been the target of Trump’s frequent attacks on Truth Social. Trump has labeled Ossoff with derogatory nicknames and claimed Collins will easily defeat him. The mayors said they risk criticism but feel compelled to support a candidate who has delivered tangible benefits to their communities.
