Republican optimism on the economy slides sharply in recent polls
New YouGov and Economist polling shows a notable drop in positive economic views among Trump voters, conservatives and MAGA supporters.
Recent polling by YouGov and one outlet indicates a sharp reduction in favorable economic assessments among the American right, with just 43% of Trump voters describing the economy as good or excellent, compared with 51% a month prior. The downturn is mirrored across other right-leaning groups: conservatives now rate the economy positively at 45%, down from 51%, and MAGA supporters at 53%, down from 63%. Additional surveys, including the University of Michigan consumer sentiment index and one outlet's poll, show Republican sentiment indices slipping from February highs to lower July figures.
Optimism about economic direction also wanes, as fewer Trump voters believe conditions are improving. Analysts warn that declining right-wing confidence could hinder Republican efforts to persuade moderate and independent voters ahead of the upcoming midterm elections.
Why it matters
Falling economic confidence among Republicans may weaken GOP electoral prospects in the November midterms.
