Republican poll shows strong voter backing for tariffs on Mexican beer
A poll commissioned by a Republican strategist indicates that a large majority of likely voters support tariffs on Mexican-origin beer and favor protecting American brewing jobs.
John McLaughlin of McLaughlin and Associates released a poll showing 65% of likely voters nationwide favor tariffs on Mexican beer, compared with 23% who oppose. When respondents were informed that such duties might increase beer prices, support stayed roughly the same at 67% versus 23%. The poll also revealed that 89% back policies protecting American beer jobs and businesses.
In 18 closely contested congressional districts, 54% supported the tariffs, though that figure dropped to 50% when price effects were mentioned. Among independents and undecided voters in those districts, majorities still favored the tariffs and protective policies. The findings are being positioned as a potential election-year issue to mobilize Republican voters and attract swing voters in battleground areas.
