Republican strategist laments Trump’s focus on symbols over lasting reforms

Republican consultant Melik Abdul, who has supported Donald Trump in three elections, appeared on a televised panel and criticized the president’s current agenda. He said Trump has squandered an opportunity to build a durable, multiracial working-class coalition by fixating on symbolic gestures, such as trying to have his name associated with the Kennedy Center. The conversation, led by Neera Tanden of the Center for American Progress, highlighted concerns that Americans are more worried about high gas prices and trade tensions than presidential vanity projects.

Abdul referenced one outlet's piece he authored, noting that many of Trump’s second-term actions are being reversed by courts. He concluded that Republican voters would rather see Trump focus on policy and the upcoming midterms than on symbolic battles that appeal only to his core supporters.
