Republicans and independents show weak confidence in US election fairness, poll finds
A new Gallup poll shows only about a third of Republicans and independents trust the integrity of upcoming US elections, far below Democratic confidence.
Gallup's latest poll indicates that confidence in the US electoral process is sharply divided along party lines ahead of the midterm elections. Only 37% of Republicans and 35% of independents say they trust the system, versus 63% of Democrats. The national confidence rate stands at 49%, unchanged from the 2022 midterms, and 51% of respondents doubt election honesty.
Since Trump returned to the White House in 2025, the usual link between leadership approval and election trust has vanished, making the US the sole nation where supporters of the incumbent leader show less trust than opponents. Historically, in over 100 countries, approval of government correlates with higher election confidence. The White House declined to comment on the findings.
Why it matters
Low trust among key voter groups could affect perceptions of legitimacy in the upcoming midterm elections.
