Rescue chief lauds civilians for crucial aid after deadly bus crash on Riksväg 25

An 18-year-old was killed and about ten people were hospitalized when a bus overturned on Riksväg 25, injuring over 40; rescue leader Pär Stensson praised private citizens who arrived before emergency crews.

A high-speed bus left the carriageway on Riksväg 25 on Monday, rolled into a ditch and overturned, killing an 18-year-old and injuring more than 40 people, with about ten requiring hospital care. Rescue operation commander Pär Stensson arrived roughly ten minutes after the alarm and observed that numerous private individuals had already reached the crash site, wrapping jackets around victims and staying with them throughout the rescue.

He thanked the civilians, saying their help allowed fire crews to focus on the most urgent tasks, including freeing injured passengers trapped inside the vehicle. Approximately thirty firefighters and an equal number of healthcare workers were deployed; they also drove ambulances to support medical teams and cleared a landing zone for a helicopter that evacuated a critically injured person to Karlskrona. The scene remained chaotic as rescuers worked to secure the area and treat the wounded.

Why it matters

The incident shows how civilian assistance can be vital in large-scale emergencies and underscores the challenges of coordinating rescue efforts.
