Rescue teams enter dormitory level of Plaka building collapse amid rain

Following a powerful explosion that caused a building in Athens' Plaka district to collapse, emergency teams have moved into the structure's dormitory section. In the early pre-dawn hours, the fire service (ΕΜΑΚ) retrieved a dead woman from the debris on Λυσικράτους street, confirming the worst fears. Deputy mayor Πάρης Χαρλαύτης explained that municipal fire units, supported by hired machinery, have cleared half the building and are now focused on the underground dormitory level.

He described the situation as “critical hours,” noting that rain is creating mud that hinders but also reduces dust, slowing the search for any living victims. The teams remain on standby, hoping the woman found is the only casualty. Ongoing investigations aim to determine whether any survivors remain trapped.
