Rescued platypuses quickly reclaimed their territories after drought-driven captivity

Five platypuses rescued from a severe drought at Tidbinbilla were held at Taronga Zoo for about five months and, after release, promptly re-established their home ranges.

A severe drought that lowered water levels at Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve near Canberra forced conservationists to intervene, rescuing seven platypuses after eight deaths. Five individuals were housed at Taronga Zoo for roughly five months before being released back to their original locations. Researchers tracked the released animals with acoustic telemetry for up to 18 months, finding that they quickly used parts of their former home ranges and did not wander aimlessly.

Four of the five remained within the reserve for between 10 and 18 months, indicating successful reintegration. Female platypuses showed strong fidelity to specific ponds, whereas the male displayed a broader ranging pattern, consistent with known male behavior. Their movements aligned with areas rich in aquatic insects and gastropods, suggesting rapid return to effective foraging zones. The study highlights that short-term captivity can be an effective emergency measure for platypus conservation when habitats recover.
