Military units, firefighters, volunteers and sniffer dogs are scouring collapsed structures in Pereira and Cali, using cranes, dogs and heavy machinery.
Many families are sleeping in parks and temporary shelters as aftershocks shake the region. Hospitals are strained, with the Hospital Universitario del Valle partially collapsing and patients being treated outdoors. President Abelardo de la Espriella declared a state of emergency and announced rent subsidies, while the United States pledged US$15.5 million in aid.
