Researchers identify new tick-borne virus linked to flu-like illness in China
Scientists in China have discovered a previously unknown tick-borne virus, Asian longhorned tick nairovirus (ALTNV), which causes flu-like symptoms and low platelet counts.
A team from the State Key Laboratory of Pathogen and Biosecurity in Beijing identified a new orthonairovirus, Asian longhorned tick nairovirus (ALTNV), in 10.4% of 3,163 tick-bitten patients surveyed since 2009. ALTNV produces flu-like illness, fatigue, gastrointestinal symptoms and can cause thrombocytopenia, though the study did not link it alone to fatal bleeding. Patients also infected with Dabie bandavirus showed higher rates of respiratory and kidney problems, and seven of those co-infected individuals died.
Researchers stress that the overlapping symptoms of tick-borne viruses demand precise testing to guide treatment, as effective antivirals exist for flu but not for most tick-borne infections. Preventive advice includes wearing protective clothing and promptly removing ticks after outdoor activities. Findings were published in the New England Journal of Medicine.
