Residents rally at Nuremberg airport to demand curfew on night flights

On Thursday evening, residents gathered at the Hauptmarkt to voice opposition to night-time aircraft noise from Albrecht Dürer Airport, organized by the Fluglärm-Schutzgemeinschaft Nürnberg und Umgebung. Fürth mayor Thomas Jung joined the protest, noting that northern suburbs suffer most from the disturbance and that night flights are rare in Germany, with only Leipzig and Nuremberg operating them regularly. Protesters, led by Robert Mahler, pointed to an increase in tourist night flights that interfere with sleep, especially on hot nights when people must open windows to cool their homes.

Airport figures show a rise in night-flight operations from 2023 to 2024 and a projected increase for 2025. While the airport stresses that night flights meet noise-approval standards and serve vital ambulance and rescue missions, the city of Nürnberg and the state of Bavaria are urged to reduce the impact on residents. The issue is being monitored by the regional flight-noise commission, which includes representatives from the airport, the city of Fürth, and the advocacy group.
