Retail stocks tumble as V2 Retail falls 19% and DMart slides 4% after earnings update

Shares of V2 Retail dropped 19% to a 52-week low and Avenue Supermarts’ DMart fell about 4% following their September-quarter business updates.

During Monday’s trading session, V2 Retail’s shares fell 19% to ₹162.55, hitting a 52-week trough, as heavy volume changed hands on both the BSE and NSE. Avenue Supermarts, the operator of the DMart chain, saw its stock decline about 4% to ₹3,643.60, hovering near its own year-low. The price action followed the companies’ Q2FY27 business updates, which showed DMart’s standalone revenue rising 18.4% year-on-year to ₹19,206 crore and V2 Retail’s revenue increasing 28% to ₹905 crore.

Both firms highlighted store expansion and stronger grocery sales, but analysts cited rising competition from quick-commerce platforms, inflation and regulatory risks as challenges for organised retailers. Crisil Ratings and India Ratings and Research commented on the sector’s competitive intensity and the vulnerability of discretionary apparel sales to economic cycles.

Why it matters

The sharp sell-off signals investor concern over retail earnings and growing competition in India’s organised market.
