Retailers launch 'Summerween' craze as shoppers stock up on Halloween gear early
Stores are filling aisles with Halloween items weeks before autumn, a trend dubbed “Summerween,” and consumers are eager to buy them now.
Retailers across the United States are stocking Halloween merchandise far ahead of the usual season, a movement retailers label “Summerween.” Chains including The Home Depot, Michaels and HomeGoods have already set up displays featuring giant skeletons, animated monsters and themed décor. According to savings site RetailMeNot, roughly 70% of consumers plan to purchase fall or Halloween items before September, with candy, décor, costumes and seasonal scents topping the list.
Home Depot’s store manager Josh Burgess warns that high-demand items, such as the 12-foot “Skelly,” typically disappear by Labor Day, while Michaels manager Amanda Reinfelder says shoppers are requesting a “witchy” vibe and larger cauldrons. Retail insights expert Stephanie Carls says Halloween has moved from candle aisles to front yards, creating a strong early-season pull. One shopper, Melissa Lamb, noted that her early decorations have turned her home into a neighborhood attraction. Shoppers are advised to compare prices and watch for limited-time offers to avoid overspending.
