Retired admiral criticizes Fairfax school’s 9/11 lesson plan for downplaying extremist motives

Fairfax County Public Schools issued a 25th-anniversary 9/11 curriculum guide that heavily emphasizes creating “safe spaces” for Muslim and Middle Eastern students, with about half of its 1,740-word content devoted to that goal. Only a small portion—around 15%—covers the factual history of the attacks, and the guide explicitly tells teachers not to associate the events with Islam or Muslims. Retired Navy Vice Admiral Lou Crenshaw, who witnessed the Pentagon strike, described the material as a “vanilla” approach that sanitizes history and prevents students from learning a clear lesson about extremist terrorism.

He urged educators to explain al Qaeda’s extremist motives while still protecting Muslim students from collective blame. The guide also references military families and first responders sparingly, despite Fairfax’s proximity to the Pentagon, and includes a list of actions for teachers to counter anti-Muslim bias. The controversy reflects a broader debate over how 9/11 is taught in schools across the United States.
