Retired Army Lt. Colonel Doug Ollivant Wins GOP Primary to Challenge Rep. Vindman

Retired Army lieutenant colonel Doug Ollivant secured the Republican nomination for Virginia’s 7th District, positioning him to face incumbent Democrat Eugene Vindman in November.

In the recent Republican primary, retired Army lieutenant colonel Doug Ollivant emerged victorious with 56.6% of the vote, earning the right to contest Virginia’s 7th Congressional District against Democrat Eugene Vindman. The district, previously represented by Abigail Spanberger before she pursued the governorship, is viewed by GOP strategists as the most winnable seat after Vindman’s slim 51% victory in 2024. Ollivant, a 58-year-old combat veteran with two Iraq tours and experience advising coalition forces in Afghanistan, also taught at West Point and served on the National Security Council.

His campaign stresses a manufacturing renaissance, healthier food policies to curb federal deficits, and localized energy generation to meet rising demand. Social issues such as protecting women’s sports are also highlighted. Ollivant lives in Culpeper County with his wife Sabrina, seven children, two grandchildren, and a rescue dog, and cites his Catholic faith as a guiding force.

Why it matters

The race could determine whether Republicans flip a narrowly held Democratic seat in a key Virginia district.
