Returning Mallorcan laments overwhelming tourist crowds on her home island

Carol Vásquez, a native of Majorca who spent three and a half years living in Punta Cana, returned to the Balearic island during the peak summer season and expressed disappointment on social media. She described feeling overwhelmed by the sheer volume of tourists, noting that even traditional local spots such as town centres and restaurants were crowded, making it difficult for residents to enjoy the island. Vásquez emphasized that the problem extends beyond beaches to everyday local life.

Her observations come as Spain grapples with an overtourism crisis, with Majorca receiving roughly 13.6 million visitors last year. Balearic Government President Marga Prohens has publicly urged the introduction of visitor caps, arguing that one outlet growth model is unsustainable. Prohens highlighted that tourism management must go beyond beaches and hotels, incorporating innovation and technology to balance economic benefits with quality of life for locals.
