Rex Airlines halts Sydney services from Port Macquarie and Orange due to soaring fuel prices
Rex Airlines will temporarily stop its flights from Port Macquarie and Orange to Sydney starting Oct 25, citing high fuel costs and weak demand.
Rex Airlines confirmed that its scheduled services from Port Macquarie and Orange to Sydney will be paused beginning Oct 25, and it has not provided a timeline for reinstating them. The airline attributed the decision to ongoing elevated aviation fuel prices, which it said are driven by the conflict in the Middle East, combined with low passenger demand that renders the routes unprofitable. A company spokesperson said the suspension is part of a broader schedule optimisation and that both destinations remain served by another airline.
Customers with bookings on or after Oct 25 will be offered a full refund or the option to switch to an alternative Rex flight without additional cost. Nationals MP Alison Penfold expressed disappointment, warning that reduced competition could lead to higher fares and greater regional isolation. Rex indicated it may lift the suspension if fuel prices fall and the routes become commercially viable again.
Why it matters
The cuts reduce travel options for regional communities and could raise airfares due to less competition.
