Rheinmetall acquires Mangalia shipyard, aims to revive Romanian naval hub
The Mangalia shipyard, previously owned by Damen, was sold to Rheinmetall Real Estate România SRL after a prolonged insolvency and legal dispute. Rheinmetall plans to restart operations and develop a dual-use naval facility.
After a period of insolvency, shareholder disputes and a failed restructuring, the Mangalia shipyard was sold in a court-ordered auction to Rheinmetall Real Estate România SRL. The German defence and technology group had announced in May that it was evaluating a takeover together with Swiss partner MSC, with the goal of creating a dual-use shipbuilding hub. The transaction is described as enabling the restart of operations at one of Romania's most important industrial sites.
While the purchase secures ownership, the future of the yard hinges on attracting contracts and defining the role of the existing specialised workforce. The sale follows a series of legal battles, including arbitration in Vienna and a bankruptcy filing that led to the liquidation of assets. Rheinmetall’s stated ambition is to develop the facility for both military and civilian ship construction, but concrete projects remain to be confirmed.
Why it matters
The deal could revive a major Romanian industrial asset and boost local employment and defence manufacturing.
