Rheinmetall to acquire Romania's Mangalia shipyard for dual-use naval production
German defence firm Rheinmetall, together with MSC, won an auction for the Mangalia shipyard in Romania for EUR 138 million, planning to develop both civilian and military vessels.
Rheinmetall, the German defence conglomerate valued at roughly EUR 50 billion, confirmed its plan to purchase the Mangalia shipyard in Romania alongside Swiss carrier MSC. The auction, organised by judicial liquidator CITR, awarded the yard to Rheinmetall Real Estate Romania for EUR 138 million, excluding VAT, with the Romanian government approving the transaction. Rheinmetall described the acquisition as a step toward establishing a dual-use production site, separating civil and military shipbuilding activities across distinct zones.
The yard will initially support the build of two 96-metre offshore patrol vessels and two 43-metre diver support vessels ordered by Romania, while also serving as a base for further naval projects. CEO Tim Wagner said the company will comprehensively expand and modernise the facility to meet future demand and strengthen its presence in the region.
Why it matters
The deal expands Rheinmetall's shipbuilding capacity and deepens defence ties between Germany and Romania.
