Right-wing politicians denounce school workshop as gender-politics propaganda

Mi Hazánk leader Toroczkai László and allied MPs accused a Pécs NGO’s school activity of LGBT lobbying after the new child-protection law was passed.

A career-orientation workshop organized by the Emberség Erejével Alapítvány took place at Újpetri primary school in Pécs, where students played a game exploring gender-neutral hobbies. Shortly after the parliament approved a new child-protection law, politicians from Fidesz, KDNP and Mi Hazánk accused the NGO of advancing LGBT-related agendas and warned that such activities could mislead children. Toroczkai László, Mi Hazánk president, criticised the notion that boys might like pink or girls could become firefighters, calling for a halt to such messaging.

The NGO’s director Nyirati András emphasized that the session was fully legal, supervised by teachers, and did not address sexual orientation. He also noted that the school had coordinated the event weeks before the law’s adoption. The controversy revived earlier attacks on the NGO from 2017, when government supporters alleged it would serve as a migrant centre funded by Soros. Polyák Gábor, former member of the NGO’s supervisory board, has since resigned.

Why it matters

The dispute highlights how Hungary’s new child-protection law is being used to frame gender-education initiatives as political threats.
